1 am paper writing

Well, I've finally hit my 2,500 word mark for my midterm. Hopefully I've managed at least a few insightful comments about the gap between photography, culture, and reality.

Anyhow, my big announcement is that I'm finally up on the webpage for the academic journal I've been interning at this semester. Maybe now people will actually know what I'm doing.

flashback to summer

This summer I spent a week chekcing out DC, Philly, and NY. It was kind of a whirlwind, but I got some good pictures that you might want to see. Top to bottom: Modern art in Philly, Guggenheim, and Vietnam War Memorial. By the way, I discovered I have this weird fascination with the Vietnam War Memorial.

I finally have a blog

Here it is. I'm sure you're astounded. I've finally upgraded to blog writer.

Having a blog in some ways seems rather presumptuous. I mean, of all the people to listen to, and all the limited time we have, what makes me feel so confident that what I have to say is so important? But, I do have some pretty good things to say. Let's just hope they make it to the blog.

Right now I'm pretty much avoiding writing my midterm, as I don't feel like rehashing everything we've talked about in class for the past 6 weeks. It's for my Photography and Culture class, which is good, but it feels like we just keep dwelling on the same points over and over. We've discussed changes in culture overtime as evidenced by photography, particularly in people's relationships: how they pose, where pictures are taken, and who takes them. One of the most interesting points, but sadly now one of the most belabored, is the "smile of the camera" phenomena. How often do we take pictures of sad times? One of the articles I read was about a Jewish family fleeing from Nazi Germany by ship, yet in all their pictures they are smiling. One of the family members died on the journey, but you would never be able to tell from any of the photos.

Yep. Still in grad school and as nerdy as ever.
